Understanding Vehicle Financing in Kenya

Two loans with the same monthly repayment can differ by hundreds of thousands of shillings. Here is where that difference hides.

Vehicle finance in Kenya is competitive, which is good news, but it is quoted in a way that makes comparison difficult. Lenders advertise the monthly repayment because it is the number buyers respond to — and it is the number that hides the most.

The four variables that matter

  1. Deposit — usually 20% to 30% of the vehicle value, occasionally lower for salaried applicants
  2. Term — typically 12 to 60 months; longer terms lower the monthly figure and raise the total cost
  3. Interest rate — quoted either as reducing balance or flat, and these are not comparable
  4. Fees — arrangement, valuation, tracking device, insurance financing and early settlement penalties

Reducing balance versus flat rate

This is the single most important distinction, and it is where most buyers lose money. On a reducing balance loan, interest is charged on what you still owe, so the interest portion falls every month. On a flat rate loan, interest is charged on the original amount for the entire term.

A 13% flat rate is roughly equivalent to a 23% to 24% reducing balance rate over three years. Presented side by side as monthly figures, the two look similar. Over the life of the loan, they are not.

Always ask for the total amount repayable, in shillings, over the full term. One number, and it ends the ambiguity.

What lenders assess

  • Six months of bank statements, and consistency matters more than the size of the balance
  • Your existing debt service ratio across all facilities, not just this one
  • The vehicle's age — many lenders will not finance a unit older than eight years at maturity
  • Employment stability, or two to three years of filed returns if you are self-employed

Asset finance for businesses

If the vehicle is registered to a company, asset finance is usually the better structure. Rates tend to be lower because the vehicle secures the facility, and the interest and depreciation may be deductible against business income. Speak to your accountant before choosing between a personal loan and asset finance — the difference is often larger than any rate you could negotiate.

Practical steps

Model the repayment before you approach anyone, so you walk in with a number in mind. Then get at least three written offers and compare total repayable rather than monthly instalments. Check the early settlement terms — being able to clear the loan without penalty is worth a great deal if your circumstances improve.

Our financing calculator gives an indicative monthly figure in a few seconds. It is an estimate for planning, not an offer, and the final terms always come from the lender.
